Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Scoring Services

Scoring Center

The Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Scoring Service (HMH) provides test scanning, scoring, and reporting services for norm- and criterion-referenced educational tests. Offering customers maximum flexibility, HMH is capable of providing paper reports and data on CD as well as data files for DataManager and Interactive Results Manager. We treat each document securely and score carefully to ensure that only accurate and high quality reports are produced and delivered.

HMH Scoring Service is responsible for the program system development, refinement, and maintenance; efficient and systematic collection of materials; scanning, scoring, editing, file maintenance, and quality control; and processing and report production activities for each assessment program. Extensive document editing and quality assurance is part of every order, and regular checks for scanning accuracy and reliability routinely verify that the scanning equipment and systems employed are operating optimally in terms of both accuracy and efficiency. We further ensure quality during document processing and scoring by adhering to the guidelines listed in the SCASS/TILSA Quality Control Checklist for Processing, Scoring, and Reporting provided by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Indeed, quality assurance procedures are embedded throughout the entire tracking system. This includes our unique foldering process that facilitates the location and distribution of reports at the district and school levels.

Our scoring center is located in a separate 50,000-square-foot facility and is a secure building with limited, authorized access only. Off-site storage of scored documents, when necessary, is at a limited-access, guarded facility. The scoring center is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to serve our customer needs.

The HMH® Scoring Service provides a full array of new, attractive, and functional score reports and scoring services. School systems may determine their level of involvement in the scoring process. School systems preferring to leave all the scoring and reporting to the HMH Scoring Service may simply send in their answer documents, and within fifteen working days, their score reports will be shipped.
