The “5 E’s”

California GO Math™’s route to rigor is centered on the researched-based “5E” instructional model:

Engage

The Essential Question engages students in the key concept in the form of a question.

Explore

The Explore Activity requires students to explore the math from the beginning so they build a deep and conceptual understanding.

Explain

Students see worked-out examples to help develop fluency with the math and explain in Your Turn.

Elaborate

Students are provided with opportunities to elaborate with Math Talk and Guided Practice. Students then record their understanding with the Essential Question Check-In.

Evaluate

What if?, Analyze, Multi-step, and H.O.T. problems all provide independent practice. Multi-step problems get to Depth of Knowledge levels, preparing students for the Smarter Balanced* Assessment.
